The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church History
Early Days
Organized Lutheran work in Morristown began, when a small, but devoted people organized Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church on July 13, 1880.
They proceeded to erect a church building with a congration numbering less than a dozen members.
The old church building at 314 South Hill Street was later occupied by the Theater Guild.
Registered pastors ministered in Morristown until 1915 after which time an extended vacancy occurred.
A New Begining
In 1956 Reverend Edwin N. Troutman was sent to Morristown to serve as the mission developer for Good Shepherd. The first church service was held at the Kingmyer Hotel (225 W 1st North St Morristown, TN) on Palm Sunday March 25, 1956.
Later the congregation secured permission to use the Seventh Day Adventist Church for services (from April 1956 to July 1962). On October 28 1956, there was a formal organizational service.
Property for the future church site was purchased on Andrew Johnson Highway.
The ground-breaking service was held on December 17, 1961. The opening service was on July 15, 1962.
The congregation witnessed periods of growth and decline in membership offen due to the industrial growth and decline. In January of 1977 the church became a self supporting congregation. In the fall of 1989 a vote for pursuing a new sanctuary and narthex was passed. The service of ground breaking was on May 13, 1990.
